Nocturnal Knit

Hi fellow nightowls!

I've been knitting for years but somehow I've never made an actual sock. Booties, slippers, ipod socks ... but no just plain socks. I'm starting out by making Amy Swenson's Universal Toe-Up socks from knitty with Lion Magic Stripes (if I screw them up at least I'm not out $30 for really good sock yarn).

I've also started a knitalong for other first time sock knitters. If there are any others working on their first socks, please join! The KAL is hosted at myfirstsocks, with a flickr group and a ravelry -along.

Help [May. 22nd, 2007|03:47 pm]
Nocturnal Knit

I had started a baby blanket for my friend but I lost one of the needles and I dont really have the money to go out and buy another pair! Does anyone have any suggestions for a quickly knit blanket in maybe size 7 afgan needles? ( I know it wont go that quickly considering its size 7 needles) I dont think I can do something like cables yet though, I cant read the charts and I havent dont anything too complicated yet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. X-posted to a couple of other knitting communities

pocast update and a question [May. 17th, 2007|09:26 pm]
Nocturnal Knit

The list of knitting related podcasts in this post has been updated with some new shows.  check the comments!

I know we have nocturnal knitters, but do we have any nocturnal (or diurnal for that matter) spinners or dyers?

I got some Jacquard Acid Dyes yesterday and I've never used them before.  I also got to spin on a wheel for the first time at Maryland Sheep & Wool.  I won't have a wheel of my own for at least a few years but a friend has one I can sue when I see her, which will be happening in a few weeks.  Any tips on either of these two would be appreciated (that haven't been recently posted at spinningfiber or dyeingfiber since I read those too).

So my friend lives in Needham Mass and is looking for a knitting group to join over the summer. Any suggestions?

http://www.modadea.com/patterns/LM0240.htm so I am working on this pattern and I am very stuck. They say to increase the first stitch but I have NO idea how to do that. and it also says increase the last stitch, is that by doing a yarnover? ::le sigh::

MD Sheep & Wool [Apr. 18th, 2007|08:07 pm]
Nocturnal Knit

Are any of you planning on going to the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival this year?  It's May 5 and 6 at the Howard County Fairgrounds.  I'll be there at least Saturday and would love to meet up with some fellow knitters.

knitting questions.....x-posted [Mar. 13th, 2007|10:13 pm]
Nocturnal Knit

Has anyone here ever heard of or tried thrumming?  My mom was looking it up on her lappy (we're knerd knitting together with our laptops) and came across this.  It looks pretty neat and we'd both like to try it.  Just wondering if anyone has tried it and how they found it to work for them?

On another note, my boyfriend and I are planning on shearing their llama's this summer.  We're thinking of hand spinning the wool.  Has anyone worked with llama wool before?  Also, two of them are dark brown/black.  Would we have to bleach the wool to be able to dye the dark stuff?  One of them is white so that won't be a problem.  So yeah, I don't know if that was clear or not, but I hope it made sense to all of you.  Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

just one more... [Mar. 13th, 2007|03:39 pm]
Nocturnal Knit

Just curious as to how many of us get wrapped up in the 'just one more...' cycle. You know what I mean; you know you really should get to bed, but you're sooo close to finishing that you decide just to do one more row... then another... then another...

Then you realize it's three am and you need to be awake in about three hours.

stash knitting and some new podcasts [Mar. 9th, 2007|06:58 pm]
Nocturnal Knit

Happy new year, nighttime knitters (yeah I know it's March but it's been a while since we've had a post).

Just wondering, how many of us are knitting only from stash this year?  I'm on a yarn diet (no purchasing, only swaps except for very special occasion project yarn) to save money.  I found an interesting site the other day, for swappers and people trying to destash to needy knitters:  Good Yarn Karma.  Also along those lines is DeStash - Cash For Your Stash! and of course our own knitswap  .

In addition to those listed in my previous podcast list post, I've found some new ones you should check out:
Trueyarns - a podcast for the creative person
Stash and Burn
Lixie Knits It
Christa Knits
Purl Diving

ETA a few more:
Yarns from the Southland
Moonlight Stitches
and knitting news-cast has moved to a new site
